We are experiencing various ICT4D initiatives in developing countries for almost a decade. Out of many, one can clearly identify some good number of projects which are now been implemented and going on. In contrast, we have not yet seen much initiative to carry forward this towards an institutional process, till now most of the initiatives are based on projects / program.
Considering the potential of ICT in development domain in developing countries and its diversity to contribute in wider spectrum of livelihood, in Bangladesh we are in a process to establish a center of excellence titled Bangladesh Institute of ICT in Development (BIID). Main focus of this initiative will be Research, Innovate, Test and Rollout of ICT4D projects directly of through partner organizations. We are expecting that the new initiave will be rolled out from July 2008.
Our working expeirence on broader ICT4D (Agriculture, e-Governance, Health, e-Commerce, Eduaction, Youth etc.) and direct involvement at field level through implementation of different projects like telecenters, content, capacity building, content development, awraeness & demand stimulation, connectivity etc.) makes us confident to start the new venture as the 1st of such kind of initiative in Bangladesh.
BIID will go for establishing alliances with local and international organizations working on ICT4D to ensure maximum knowldege sharing between the practitioners and policy makers.
BIID will also of offer learning facilities for the young ict4d practitioners and this will create new opportunities for the young ICT4D practitioners to work as volunteer and can earn experience on various ICT4D projects of Bangladesh.
