The WiderNet Project is a University of Iowa service organization dedicated to improving digital communications in developing countries around the world.
The program, which is based out of the School of Library and Information Science, advocates information technology development through coaching and training at partner institutions. The organization was founded in the year 2000 to deliver educational materials to the seven out of eight people worldwide who have inadequate Internet access.
Since then, the WiderNet Project has continued to bridge the digital divide by providing high-impact, low-cost training opportunities for both individuals and institutions in the developing world. In addition, WiderNet conducts inexpensive, best practice information technology research and manages donations of equipment and software for partner universities. Through these opportunities, WiderNet has trained thousands of university staff and administrators in programs highly customized to suit their institutions' specific needs.
In addition, the WiderNet Project is responsible for the creation and distribution of the eGranary Digital Library, an offline digital resource that delivers millions of educational documents to developing countries where Internet access is minimal and expensive.
Staff members of the WiderNet Project work continuously to develop new, innovative means to bridge the digital divide and improve communication technologies in developing nations around the world.
