Disaster Relief and Emergency Preparedness
Developed in collaboration with:
EDC Center for Media & Community | LearningTimes

This community has been created in response to the devastating December 2004 tsunami that killed tens of thousands of people across Asia. The space can be used for discussing the role that information and communication technologies (ICTs) can play in averting natural disasters and assisting relief efforts. Participants may also use it to share resources on relief work during times of crisis, as well as ICTs and emergency preparedness.

Virtual meeting room. Thanks to a a donation from LearningTimes.org, we now have our own virtual meeting room for use by this community. It allows real-time interaction, with audio, whiteboard, chat and application sharing. The room is available 24 hours a day. If you would like to host your own event, please schedule it by adding an event to our calendar. Be sure to select "Disaster Relief & Emergency Preparedness" from the Community drop-down menu.

But as we learn more about why some people survived and others didn't, it's made me realize that bridging the digital divide -- particularly in terms of promoting technology literacy and e-government for all -- is more important than ever. spacer

DDN, LearningTimes Launch Online Community for Tsunami Relief Efforts
By: Andy Carvin, A Sense Of Place Network | December 29, 2004
In response to this week's devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean, we've created an online community workspace on disaster relief and emergency preparedness. This virtual community can be used for posting online resources, documents, news, and articles about tsunami relief efforts. Users also may take advantage of the site's Web bulletin board and post their own blog entries. For the time being the space will focus on tsunami-related relief efforts; in the long haul we hope the space can be used for discussing the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in emergency preparedness and disaster relief. Additionally, LearningTimes has generously donated an e-conference tool to aid coordination and discussion of local relief efforts.
