I'm new and need to find someone to sponsor a course
January 16, 2007 @ 02:30 PM

Hi, I live in South Carolina, where we have got and/or are getting a fairly great library system with beautiful rooms for classes and things.

You can volunteer to teach computer classes and I want to.

But to do so your course need to be sponsored by an organization with at least ten members--which is why I joined this one.

Is it possible for me to say I am a member of this organization and teaching a course??

A brief outline of the 2 courses I want to teach is below; I can provide links to all the major resources I am planning to use as well!

1. I'm interested in teaching a class in using the computer to research your genealogy (I have researched/documented mine this way; it was interesting; I learned a bit of history in the process but there are some tricks to understanding the resources out there that I can share, including online maps that help you understand when what counties formed from what). So this is mainly a class about where to start and about finding online resources, though it would also include online notetaking (using Wordpad and Notepad; I never use Word; too slow and it can get too many bugs though we have good security at the library. And it would include information about personal information and the online world.
My main resources are at:
http://www.geocities.com/nearsoutheastcdc/HistoryLinks/GenealogyLinks.html
(I created this list for a non-profit organization after I volunteered for Teaming4Technology but I fear scant use has been made of them; I had to quit that because of car problems.)
____________
My basic tricks for notetaking:
*put anything I copy and paste inside quotation marks;
*paste into my notes URL where I found something whether I am just jotting down my own comments or am copying and pasting
*save the whole thing in a long blog but jot brief subject headings at the top of sections as I find my research naturally tends to move from subject-to-subject
*if I have an image I want to save--in my notes, and not for other without permission--when I save it I add to its original name the name of the site where I stole it from [basically]; I have links to resources on copyright cases as well in case any brave person thinks this is a good way to get images for other kinds of use)

2. also a class in basic html (mainly for putting up a family tree or other personal site),
again with information about personal information in the online world.
My main resources would be W3c tutorials--I am familiar with several--plus my own experience with what works and what does not, especially regarding different browsers.
I also have a bit of info about javascript, and of course about the pro's and con's of editing pages in Word or in Front Page.

Thanks.

Thanks very much; I will request the room for the courses here and create
my complete (more detailed) outline/syllabus,
post those at this site (as a resource),
and indicate here where I am posting them!!!

That way, anyone else who wants to use my outline/links can!

Should have something this week!

Sincerely,

C. E. Whitehead
