Internet Censorship in Burma
October 2, 2007 @ 06:29 PM

I'm outraged at the actions of the Burmese government to try and shut off internet activity to prevent images coming out of the country. What they probably haven't realized is the viral effect of shocking images like the ones we have been seeing through the internet and social media.

Digg on Burma (over 500 Diggs - sensational)

Just a warning, there are pictures of dead and injured people from the violence in Burma in some of these photos.

When internet activity is finally restored I'm expecting to see a lot worse come out. I wish I could do more to help these people. I have colleges from Burma and I have already joined a number of online protests - hopefully the Burmese government sees these. I have also been voting for these stories on all of these networks and trying to post my own where they don't exist.

Does anyone have any ideas about what else we can do on the internet in protest?

Continue spreading information and photos about the current situation, using the internet as a means to create awareness. To this point I had yet to see photos of the sort you have posted.

I think I read somewhere that the internet was reconnected in Burma in the last few days.

It'd be a shame if the government repressed the democratic movement. I guess what's happening in Burma is great reason to keep the net out of the control of powerful entities.
